THE MECUP™ menstrual cup is a feminine hygiene product that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. Its purpose is to prevent menstrual fluid (blood from uterine lining) from leaking onto clothes.
Menstrual cups are made of flexible medical grade silicone and shaped like a bell with a stem. The stem is used for insertion and removal. The bell-shaped cup seals against the vaginal wall just below the cervix. Every 4–12 hours (depending on the amount of flow), the cup is removed, emptied, rinsed, and reinserted. After each period or before using a new MECUP™
should be boiled for at least 5 minutes and stored for use the next month and boiled before use. Repeat this boiling every month.
Unlike tampons and pads, cups collect menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it. One cup Is reusable for up to five years, but we suggest replacing after 1 year unless the cup is in good condition. This makes their long-term cost lower than that of disposable tampons or pads,
though the initial cost is higher. Menstrual cups are more practical and eco-friendlier than pads and tampons. Given that the menstrual cup is reusable, its use greatly decreases the amount of waste generated from menstrual cycles, as there is no daily waste.
The MECUP™ is first folded either using C fold Or U fold technique and then inserted into the vagina. It will normally unfold automatically and create a light seal against the vaginal walls. In some cases, the user may need to twist the cup or flex the vaginal muscles to ensure the cup is fully open. If correctly inserted, the cup shouldn’t leak or cause any discomfort. In
comparison with a tampon, the menstrual cup should be placed lower in the vaginal canal.
While sitting on the toilet or standing with one leg up on the bathtub, gently separate your labia with your free hand. Holding the folded cup between your thumb and forefinger, push the curved edge of the folded cup into your vagina horizontally.
WASH / Again, start out by washing your hands with warm water and a mild soap. RELAX / Find a comfortable position that works for you: lie down, squat, sit on the toilet or stand up. Being relaxed is essential as removing your menstrual cup will only be more difficult if you tense up REMOVE / When removing your menstrual cup, pull slightly on the stem while using your abdominal muscles to push the MECUP downwards until you can reach the base. Give the base of the cup a gentle pinch to release the suction and ease it out. Avoid removing your menstrual cup by pulling the stem as this might cause discomfort.
No one expects you to be an instant menstrual cup pro, so we recommend you practice inserting and removing your cup before you get your period.
If you’re not used to using a tampon then it might cause a bit discomfort. Using a cup does require that you are comfortable with your body and period. Therefore, if you decide to give it a go, you might want to practice in the beginning. If it feels uncomfortable don’t force it, but take a break, relax and try again later. The entrance of the vagina is more tense and smaller in width than the rest of the vagina so gradually adapting your body to accommodate the menstrual cup will make insertion easier.
Because the MECUP is a medical device we recommend that you replace it annually. However, it’s important that you discontinue using your MECUP immediately if you notice a sticky or powdery film on the surface of the cup, a foul odour from the cup, if it accidentally falls in the toilet, or you used it while you had a yeast or bacterial infection.
Incorrect use of the MECUP may result in difficulty removing the cup or minor complications. If you experience any adverse effects when using the MECUP, discontinue use and consult your healthcare practitioner.
